8/4/24. Last day in Rome. Palazzo Doria Pamphilj..

What a great day.  I'm  overwhelmed by such fine art.  Direct bus trip with Cheryl into center and visited the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.  Now a museum. But also a private home. Started in early 15th century.  A long history of importance in Rome.  In places showing its age, drapes, walls. But I can't  imagine the cost of upkeep.  I hope they can get funds to keep it well  A jaw-dropping gallery.  Each turn more magnificent.  Not as well-known, but highly recommended....and not 10,000 tourists crowded inside.  We had a great girl day.

Always start our day with pastry and coffee

Not sure what this is.  Not a bike rack.  Anyone know?

Entrance

Main entry hall.

Not your everyday ceiling

Chandeliers down all halls.  Hundreds of them

Ballroom

That is silk wallpaper

Wow

The money changers

This was so interesting- every day life.  This lady is picking a flea off her blouse and putting it into the basin of water.

This artist has recently been identified.  He is famous for his use of light...light source.  Especially lovely how the light shines on her.

Pope Innocent X
Diego Velasquez

Most famous painting in the Palace.
He looks right through you.

Peter Brueghel, the Elder
A Battle in the Bay of Naples (fictional battle)

Beautiful sofa, I love this fabric.

So interesting.  This is Garden of Eden.  The foreground is very clear, but as we move back in the painting it is less clear.....because back in the day they weren't 100% sure how some of the exotic animals precisely looked.  No photographs!!   So they painted them more vague.  I loved learning this.

Vague elephants in background

The prodigal son in the background

Went to a great sweets shop and got a few treats.  Fun store.  Only so much room in suitcase.

Arizona Iced Tea

Beautiful boxes of chocolates

Pasta for lunch, yum.

Walking back to bus, beauty every place you looked.

Free water fountains around the city You can stop and fill your bottle.  Water free  but be sure to have a euro in your pocket to pee.

Daily afternoon snack.  Delightful cannoli. Something I love.

Street stuff

Our Airbnb, nice balbalcony.

Two tired girls after our day out.

Hope you enjoyed.  This was a very special day for me here.  I will never forget this museum.  I say that often, but some of these works of art just make me feel out of this world wonderful.
